conclusions these results indicate that the pcr method is a powerful genotypic assay for the detection of adhesin-encoding operons. thus, this assay can be recommended for clinical use to detect virulent urinary e. coli strains, as well as epidemiological studies. materials and methods a total of 100 upec isolates were obtained from urine samples of patients with uti. the prevalence of 5 virulence genes encoding type 1 fimbriae (fimh), pili associated with pyelonephritis (pap), s and f1c fimbriae (sfa and foc) and afimbrial adhesins (afa) were determined through pcr method. we also investigated the phylogenetic background of all isolates. in addition, the distribution of adhesin-encoding operons between the phylogroups was assessed. results the prevalence of genes encoding for fimbrial adhesive systems was 95% for fim, 57% for pap, 16% for foc, and 81% for sfa. the operons encoding for afa afimbrial adhesins were identified in 12% of isolates. the various combinations of detected genes were designated as virulence patterns. the fim gene, which occurred in strains from all phylogenetic groups (a, b1, b2, and d) was evaluated and no significant differences were found among these groups. conversely, significant differences were observed in relation to pap, afa, foc, and sfa operons. background uropathogenic escherichia coli (upec) with its virulence factors is the most prevalent cause of urinary tract infection (uti). objectives; this study aimed to determine the occurrence of fim, pap, sfa, and afa genes among 100 upec isolates collected from patients diagnosed with uti.

Detection of fim, pap, sfa and afa Adhesin-Encoding Operons in Escherichia coli Strains Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections

ABSTRACT              Background and objectives: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infectious diseases caused by bacteria. The primary etiologic agent of UTIs is Escherichia coli. Uropathogenic E.coli (UPEC) strains have a number of specific virulence factors, which can worsen UTIs. This study was performed to...

Detection of pap, sfa, afa and fim Adhesin-Encoding Operons in Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli

The occurrence of fim, pap, sfa, and afa genes was evaluated in 200 Escherichia coli strains isolated from chickens diagnosed with omphalitis, salpingitis, swollen head syndrome, or chronic respiratory disease. Analysis of the strains by colony hybridization tests demonstrated that 96% of the isolates were fim, 16% were pap, and 6% were sfa. None of the isolates was afa. The fim gene occurred i...

comparison of the common adhesin coding operons distribution in uropathogenic and phylogenetic group b2 and a escherichia coli isolates

background escherichia coli is one of the most causative pathogen of urinary tract infection. urinary tract infections (utis) are the second most common cause of morbidity and remain a serious health concern among the clinicians. the severity of uti caused by uropathogenic e. coli (upec) is due to the expression of a wide spectrum of virulent factors such as adhesin coding operons. little is kn...

Introduction: Urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by E coli is one of the most common diseases in community. Colonization of E. coli and its attachment to the uroepithelium are mediated by adhesions such as P, Fim and S fimbriae. The present study was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of fimbrial virulence genes in Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates from the patients with urinary tra...

The Detection of Fimbrial Pathogenic Genes in E. coli Strains Isolated from Patients with Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract Bachground and objectives: The ability of adherence to the surface of host cell is very critical in the colonization of microbial pathogens. It has been revealed that E. coli strains that infect urinary tracts have different fimbrea such as I, S, FIC, Dr, and fimbrial adhesions. Material and Methods: In this study, 363 urine samples were obtained from patients with urinary tract infect...
